A clear, concise introduction to modern pharmacology, this valuable and popular book – now in its 4th edition – reflects the most up-to-date drug information in the field. Arithmetic and the calculation of drug dosages are reviewed as well as material on the nursing process as it applies to the management of pharmacologic agents. “Introductory Clinical Pharmacology” examines all major drug classifications and the general principles of drug administration and dosages. Chapters are divided into drug sections, drug uses, and adverse reactions associated with the administration of a particular pharmacologic agent. The nursing process applicable to the administration of a specific class or type of drug is presented after the discussion of each class or type of drug. Drugs included in each chapter are represented by a summary drug table. Concise and easy-to-understand explanations stress nursing responsibilities for administration, and the importance of patient teaching as a significant factor in patient compliance with the therapeutic regimen. Nursing diagnoses identify patient problems applicable to the drug being administered. Special features of this book include drug chapters ordered by drug classification instead of body system; learning objectives indicated at the beginning of each chapter; each drug class discussed in terms of its actions, uses, adverse reactions, and nursing process; expanded nursing process sections; nursing diagnosis sections which include patient teaching information under “knowledge deficit” in bulleted lists; and summary drug tables in each chapter which list generic and trade drug names, uses, adverse reactions, and usual dosage ranges.

Parasitic infections such as malaria, schistosomiasis, trypanosomiasis and onchoceriasis are the scourge of the tropical countries. Many of the drugs used for the treatment of tropical parasitic infections were introduced more than 30 years ago. Most of these drugs are toxic and have complicated dosage regimens, but, because of the low economic incentive, pharmaceutical companies have shown little interest in developing new drugs to control diseases prevalent in developing countries.; However, there has been notable progress in research into parasitic diseases and a number of important drugs have been introduced for some diseases since the 1970s. Moreover, recent data on the pharmacokinetics and field evaluations of these drugs have revealed that their effectiveness can be improved and their safety increased.; This handbook is designed to provide information about the pharmacological properties and therapeutic uses of the major drugs currently employed to combat the human parasitic infections encountered in the tropics. Each of the 38 drugs covered in the book are presented under the following headings: chemical structure, physical properties, pharmacology and mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, clinical trials, pregnancy and lactation, side effects, contraindications and precautions, dosage, preparations, and references.

Author’s comments to this book

I would like to briefly explain our purpose in authoring this prescription manual. Every year, there are 7,000-10,000 deaths reported in the United States due to prescription errors. There are a number of reasons why the administration of medications has become so complex. These include polypharmacy (patients on many medications at the same time), the rapid volume and fast pace of today’s clinical practices, the dizzying array of new and complicated drugs on the market and the loss of the “family pharmacist” that knows patients and their medications personally. Our main objective in creating the book is to provide the most essential information on commonly prescribed drugs in an easy to use, pocket sized(large pocket!)edition. This book is the only one of it’s kind written by experts in pharmacology and clinical practice. I am an MD in the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago and have a busy clinical practice and also teach and do clinical research. My father, Dr. Seymour Ehrenpreis, is a PhD in Biochemistry and Pharmacology, who not only adds a basic scientist’s knowledge to the information provided but has also taught thousands of medical students the art of drug prescription. Our Advisory Board consists of 17 clinicians ranging from Professors of Medicine in a variety of specialties from several medical schools, a physician’s assistant with the US Army, a microbiologist and a clinical psychologist. These individuals have all worked carefully to glean the most important and essential information needed to safely and properly prescribe about 500 drugs including over 900 trade names from a clinician’s prospective. Areas covered for each entry include drug name, brand names, mechanism of action, susceptible organisms(for antibiotics, doses and indications, adjustment of dose in liver and kidney diseases, the elderly and children, timing with meals, use during pregnancy and lactation (with recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics when available),contraindications, warnings and precautions, very detailed advice to patients for avoiding adverse reactions and other drug related problems, common and serious side effects, clinically important drug interactions, parameters for the clinicians to monitor to avoid complications and finally, editorial comments. The editorial comments are “pearls of wisdom” that the authors or our Advisory panel have added to assist the prescriber. Aside from the aforementioned advantages of this book,a number of drugs which are either not included in or are only briefly mentioned in the PDR 2001 edition are described in detail in our book. Many of these drugs, such as IV nitroglycerine, dopamine, and methylprednisolone to name just a few, are commonly prescribed. Our book provides a means of looking these up and making sure that they are prescibed correctly. Eli D Ehrenpreis MD Chicago, Illinois

This book gives a response to the increasing interest in side effects of psychiatric drugs. The association of some antipsychotics with different cardiovascular reactions, the withdrawal of certain antidepressants for security reasons, along with the possibility of better treatments for patients when side effects of medications used are known, have contributed to this interest. Meyler’s Side Effects of Psychiatric Drugs is organized by sections: antidepressants, neuroleptic drugs, hypnosedatives, drugs of abuse, drugs used in Alzheimer’s disease and psychological and psychiatric adverse effects of non-psychoactive drugs. For each section, there is overall and general information presenting the main features of the group and the different adverse reactions; then, there is information corresponding to the individual drugs with the same scheme. In this manner, the book is easy to use and information is easy to find. The editing is fantastic and has been performed by the expertise of Jeffrey K. Aronson, editor as well of Meyler’s Side Effects of Drugs, a remarkable book whose first edition was published in 1952 and remains unique in the world for his quality and the vast amount of data included. Now, Meylers’s Side Effects of Psychiatric Drugs, with advanced knowledge and the same quality and thoroughness, expands the scope of the preceding work to the field of psychiatry making this book more oriented to clinical practice. Thus, an invaluable material is delivered for psychiatrists and other clinicians interested in an update in this transcendental field. When compared to other traditional reference books such as PDF or BNF, Meylers’s Side Effects of Psychiatric Drugs provides more comprehensive, evidence-based information, and a more critical approach. In summary, Meylers’s Side Effects of Psychiatric Drugs is an essential tool for those who want to keep updated and to have an in-depth knowledge of the safety problems associated with drugs used in psychiatry.

Meyler’s Side Effects of Psychiatric Drugs is divided into 6 major sections: Antidepressants (including lithium); Neuroleptic drugs; Hypnosedatives; Drugs of Abuse; Drugs used in Alzheimer’s Disease; and Psychological and Psychiatric Side Effects of Non-psychiatric Drugs. Anticonvulsant mood stabilizers are also discussed. Each section is very comprehensive regarding the clinical uses of the class of medications, the side effects to be anticipated, drug interactions, long-term effects, and effects of drug overdosage. Compounds within a class are separately noted, and medications used throughout the world are discussed. There is an excellent and useful index, and each section has an excellent and up-to-date reference list.
